Key Features

Titanium Ring
  • High Strength-to-Weight Ratio

Titanium forgings offer exceptional strength while remaining lightweight, making them ideal for high-performance applications in aerospace and automotive industries.

  • Corrosion Resistance

Titanium's natural resistance to corrosion from seawater, chemicals, and extreme environments ensures durability and long service life in demanding applications.

  • Enhanced Durability

Forged titanium components are highly resistant to fatigue, wear, and impact, ensuring long-lasting performance in harsh conditions.

  • Heat Resistance

Titanium forgings maintain their strength and structural integrity at high temperatures, making them suitable for aerospace engines and industrial applications.

Applications

Medical

Titanium forgings are ideal for producing biocompatible implants, surgical instruments, and prosthetics, offering durability and compatibility with the human body.

Marine

Forged titanium components are used in shipbuilding, offshore structures, and marine equipment, thanks to their excellent corrosion resistance in seawater.

Automotive

Applied in high-performance vehicle parts like engine components, suspension systems, and exhausts, where strength and weight reduction are critical.

Industrial Applications

Titanium forgings are used in chemical processing, power generation, and oil & gas equipment, where corrosion resistance and durability in harsh environments are essential.

Production Process

Material Selection

High-quality titanium alloys are chosen for forging, with Ti-6Al-4V (Titanium 6% Aluminum 4% Vanadium) being one of the most commonly used titanium alloys.

Billet Preparation

The initial form of the titanium alloy is typically a billet, which is a cylindrical or rectangular piece of material. This billet is often preheated to an appropriate temperature to make it more malleable.

Heating

The billet is heated to a forging temperature that allows it to become more ductile and easier to work with. The specific temperature depends on the titanium alloy being used.

Forging

The heated billet is placed in a forging press or hammer, where it is subjected to high pressure. The force applied shapes the titanium into the desired form.

Cooling

After the forging process, the titanium component is often allowed to cool gradually to room temperature. Controlled cooling helps relieve stress and prevents the material from becoming brittle.

Heat Treatment

Depending on the application, the forged titanium part may undergo additional heat treatment processes to optimize its mechanical properties, such as strength, hardness, and durability.

Finishing

The forged titanium part may undergo additional machining, surface treatment, or quality control processes to ensure it meets the required specifications and quality standards.

Surface Treatment Techniques
1

Vacuum Annealing

Vacuum annealing ensures the titanium remains smooth and pristine post-cold rolling, imparting a subtle silver hue with a touch of grey gloss.

2

Blasting

High-pressure blasting with glass beads, metal balls, or sand achieves a matte finish, ideal for decorative purposes.

3

Embossing

Mechanical or erosive techniques create intricate designs on the titanium surface, adding a distinctive aesthetic appeal.

4

Etching

Electric etching or chemical etching methods are employed to engrave logos or text onto titanium surfaces, offering branding opportunities.

FAQ

Q: What temperature is needed for titanium forging?

A: Forging temperatures usually range between 1450°F (790°C) and 1950°F (1065°C). Lower temperatures up to 1650°F (900°C) are applicable to the unalloyed titanium, while higher temperatures are used with alloyed titanium.

Q: What is the pressure rating of a titanium flange?

A: Titanium flanges are rated by their pressure-temperature characteristics, categorized as 150#, 300#, 400#, 600#, 900#, 1500#, and 2500#. Flanges of 24″ to 60″ diameter can support a 900# rating. This translates to the maximum operating pressure of the bar and temperature of degrees Celsius.

Q: How heavy is a titanium ball?

A: This beautiful Titanium sphere measures 1" (25.4mm) weighs roughly 38 grams and is ideal for decorative purposes or used for energy and ionizing effects.

Q: Are titanium core golf balls good?

A: With a sturdy, long lasting Surlyn cover and an explosive 2-piece construction, the Titanium allows golfers of all skill levels to maximize distance and overall feel.

Q: Is titanium stronger than forged steel?

A: Is titanium stronger than steel? Titanium is significantly stronger than stainless steel, making it excellent for high-stress applications such as airplane building. Stainless steel, on the other hand, is more corrosion-resistant than titanium and is therefore commonly used in food processing and medical equipment.

Q: What is the strongest metal for forging?

A: Titanium is known for its exceptional strength, low density, and high corrosion resistance. It's as strong as steel but about 40% lighter, and it's resistant to corrosion from seawater and chlorine. Forging titanium further improves its strength and fatigue resistance.

Q: Will titanium forge weld to steel?

A: As shown in Figure 1, RMSeW was used to weld 304 stainless steel (SS) to titanium with a 63-μm thick niobium (Nb) foil interlayer. Here it can be seen that the titanium forges over the surface of the steel while the Nb interlayer remains uninterrupted and continuous across the bond surface.
